Corn plant and Dracaena brown tips

Corn plant is Dracaena fragrans, and this page covers the plant under both names. A brown tip is dead tissue and will not turn green again, so the useful question is what killed it. On this species one answer dominates so heavily that it is worth ruling in or out first: fluoride, which this plant is unusually sensitive to, moves in the transpiration stream and accumulates at the furthest point it can reach. On a long strap leaf, that point is the tip.

First: this is often normal

A hairline of brown at the very tip of otherwise healthy leaves, not spreading, on a plant that is still opening new growth from the crown, is close to universal on this species indoors and is not worth acting on. Judge it by whether the brown is advancing, not by whether it is there.

What is specific to this plant

  • Dracaena fragrans and Dracaena deremensis are both named specifically as very sensitive to fluoride by university extension guidance, which is why this plant browns at the tip in rooms where nothing else does.
  • Fluoride is not only in the tap water. The Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks and Clemson's Home and Garden Information Center name the potting medium, particularly perlite and some peats, and phosphate feeds built on superphosphate as sources in their own right.
  • The mechanism matters because it tells you where to look. Fluoride travels with the water the leaf is transpiring and is left behind where that water leaves, so it concentrates at the tip and along the margin and spares the middle of the blade.
  • Trimming a brown tip does not stop the cause and cutting into green tissue simply opens a new brown edge. Trim at an angle, following the leaf shape, and leave a hairline of brown behind.

What it could be, and how to tell

These look alike in a photograph, so each one below lists what you would ALSO see if that is the cause. Work down the list and stop at the one where the other symptoms match too.

1. Fluoride reaching the tip of a strap leaf

What else you would see

  • brown starting at the extreme tip and running back along the margin, with a narrow yellow band where it meets the green
  • the middle of the blade untouched, so the damage outlines the leaf rather than blotching it
  • older leaves worse than young ones, because the load accumulates over time
  • the plant otherwise thriving and still producing new leaves
How to confirm it: Tip and margin only, a yellow boundary band, and living growth behind it. That combination is fluoride and not disease. Damage that starts as a blotch in the middle of a blade, or that has a soft rather than a crisp edge, is something else on this list.

What to do

  1. Water with rainwater, distilled water or filtered water rather than straight from the tap.
  2. Flush the pot: pour a large volume of water through it slowly so accumulated salts leave by the drainage holes rather than staying in the mix.
  3. Trim the dead tip at an angle following the leaf shape, leaving a hairline of brown so the cut does not open live tissue.

2. Fluoride in the potting mix and the feed

What else you would see

  • tips still advancing months after switching off tap water
  • a mix visibly heavy on white perlite granules, or a recent repot into one
  • onset following a change of feed rather than a change of water
  • damage spread across the whole plant rather than on the side facing anything
How to confirm it: Tip burn that carries on after the water has been changed. Perlite, some peats and phosphate feeds carry fluoride of their own, so a plant this sensitive can be getting a full dose from its pot while its owner buys bottled water.

What to do

  1. Repot into a mix that is not heavily perlite, choosing a free-draining blend that gets its drainage from bark or grit instead.
  2. Stop using a feed built on superphosphate and choose a general houseplant feed without it.
  3. Flush the existing pot thoroughly before deciding the repot did not work, since the old load stays in the mix.

3. An outer pot that stops the salts ever leaving

What else you would see

  • a decorative sleeve or cachepot with no drainage, which is how this plant is almost always sold
  • a pale crust on the soil surface or around the drainage holes
  • water pooling invisibly under the nursery pot
  • tips browning steadily despite careful watering with clean water
How to confirm it: Lift the nursery pot out of its sleeve and look underneath. Standing water there means every flush you have given the plant has drained straight back into the root zone, so the salts you were trying to remove never left the pot.

What to do

  1. Take the nursery pot out of the sleeve to water, let it drain fully in a sink, and only then put it back.
  2. Empty the sleeve or saucer every time rather than letting it hold a reservoir.
  3. Flush the mix properly once it can actually drain, since flushing into a sealed sleeve does nothing.

4. Dry air

What else you would see

  • worst through winter and easing off in summer
  • several plants in the same room showing crisp edges at once
  • the plant sitting in the airflow from a radiator or a vent
How to confirm it: Seasonal timing plus other plants in the room doing the same thing. Dry air makes tips crisp everywhere in a heated home, and on this species it stacks on top of a fluoride load rather than replacing it.

What to do

  1. Move it out of the direct airflow from heating and cooling vents.
  2. Group plants together, or stand the pot on a tray of damp pebbles with the pot base clear of the water.

5. Underwatering, or letting it dry out too far

What else you would see

  • brown running well down the blade rather than confined to the tip and margin
  • the pot noticeably light, and the mix shrunk away from the pot wall
  • leaves creased or folded along the midrib before you water
How to confirm it: Brown reaching far down the blade with a history of the pot going bone dry. A corn plant tolerates being dry, but each hard dry-out costs leaf tissue permanently and the loss does not come back.

What to do

  1. Rewet a shrunken root ball by standing the pot in water until the surface is damp, then let it drain fully.
  2. Water when the top two inches are dry, checking with a finger rather than by the calendar.

Common questions

Is a corn plant the same thing as a Dracaena?

Yes. Corn plant is Dracaena fragrans, and the NC State Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox lists plain Dracaena among its common names. This page used to be two URLs under the two names, which meant the plant was competing with itself.

I switched to filtered water and the tips are still going. Why?

Because the water is only one of the sources. Extension guidance names perlite, some peats and phosphate feeds as fluoride sources in their own right, so a plant sitting in a perlite-heavy mix and getting a superphosphate feed can keep taking a full dose from its pot. Look at the mix and the feed next.

Should I cut the brown tips off?

Only for appearance. Dead tissue does not come back and cutting it does not stop the cause. Trim at an angle to follow the leaf shape and leave a hairline of brown, because cutting into green tissue opens a fresh brown edge straight away.
